"A bolder, toastier take on an Oktoberfestbier dry-hopped for added complexity." Brewed in the style of a Marzen / Oktoberfest lager. Available in 12 oz. bottled 4 packs and on limited draft as part of the Big Eddy Series, released fall 2013.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a snifter glass. Served above 59 degrees Fahrenheit.
(Appearance) Pours a frothy, crisp head of a light caramel tan complexion over a copper and burgundy body of high clarity, light to no visible carbonation. Retention is below average and lacing is light and spotty. 3
(Smell) Caramel and bread grains with a strong astringency, fairly clean and simple otherwise. Little to no hop characteristics. Potency is mild. 2.5
(Taste) A hair smoother and more pleasant than the aroma suggests, although this beer is still overly harsh and grainy. Sweet caramel grain syrups forward with a fairly smooth texture, soft lager acidity and stunted grainy back end. No hop character, notable solvent and ethanol impact, just not all that great. 2.75
(Mouthfeel) The texture is slick, moderately syrupy, lightly chewy, mildly dry. Carbonation is mild, generating a light frothiness and a softly crisp finish. Body is medium/heavy for the style and medium+ overall. Balance is slightly grainy and sweet over acidity and hop bitterness. Alcohol presence is medium and this beer suffers from the alcohol impact without much body to account for the balance. 3
(Overall) In general, this beer suffers from a harsh exposed graininess and a limited malt and hop range profile otherwise. Drinkable, but not very pleasant. The Oktoberfest beer is not a very common candidate to "imperialize", and the simplicity of the lager style in itself suggests that there isn't much that can be done with the ingredients aside from increasing the body and turning up the alcohol, a practice which nullifies the drinkability of the Oktoberfest entirely. I hope this was a one-off project, as it was one of the lesser impressive Big Eddy outings as of late. 2.75
